The book is about the members of a book club who meet every month to discuss one of Jane Austen’s novels. Over the six months they meet marriages are tested, affairs begin, unsuitable arrangements become suitable, and, under the guiding eye of Jane Austen, some of them even fall in love… They are ordinary people, neither happy nor unhappy, but all wounded in different ways, all mixed up about their lives and their relationships. In California’s Sacramento Valley, six people meet once a month to discuss Jane Austen’s novels.
I am giving below the summary of the story as given in the back cover of the book. I got it a few days back and finished reading it yesterday. When I went searching for the book in the bookshops, I discovered that it had miraculously disappeared! It took a few months for the bookshop folks to get me a copy. I thought that I had been a little biased against the book, and so I decided to read the book. I enjoyed it when I watched it the second time too. Then I checked the schedule to find out when the movie was going to be played again, and watched it again. I put aside my work and watched the whole movie till the end. I watched it for a few minutes and then got hooked into it. Sometime back, the movie version of the book was playing on one of the TV channels.
I never got around to reading the book after that. When I talked to fellow book club members later, they said that the book didn’t get many positive comments, and the book club members didn’t like it too much. ‘The Jane Austen Book Club’ was one of the books that was discussed during one of these meetings.
